Description
The whiskey is brought to us by Lost Lantern, an independent bottling company from Vermont. It is called Mississippi Memory and was distilled at the Rich Grain Distilling Co in Canton, Mississippi
Lost Lantern selected Rich Grain Distilling as part of their Single Distillery Series. But get this, it is the first ever “ghost distillery” they have bottled. What is a ghost distillery, you might be wondering? It means the distillery is no longer in operation. The name Mississippi Memory makes a little more sense, right?
Founded by David Rich in 2016, Rich Grain became only the 3rd ever legal distillery in Mississippi. Unfortunately like many other small businesses, Rich Grain had to close its distillery in 2020 due to Covid. Lost Lantern was able to acquire 5 and 7 year old bourbon and age them further in 15 gallon barrels. The mash of the two bourbons used in Mississippi Memory are 66% corn, 17% rye, 17% malted barley, in one, and a 66% corn, 17% wheat, 17% malted barley in the other. The bourbon is non chill filtered, with no color added, and huge 70% abv!!! Yes, 140 proof bourbon! With such a high proof aging in small barrels only 500 bottles were completed.
We can all hope there will be a push to resurrect this brief but great distillery. But for the only bottle you might ever have, look for notes of kind Southern Hospitality, including cola, tart fruit candy, caramel muffin, crumble cake, brown sugar with some leather and oak. Personally, I think it drinks better without water. But feel free to add a drop to help make it more approachable. Hopefully after tasting this whiskey you will create new memories to share with friends and family.
